What if I haven’t found my “thing” yet?
Yesterday I joined a very impactful webinar titled “current me vs Future me“. It basically was a webinar aimed at teaching a young adult the skills and knowledge needed to grow into where he/she wants to be. The webinar was worth my Saturday.
One of the highlights was the importance of knowing your purpose and growing into it daily. This was a point all the speakers emphasised on. Knowing your purpose early on would give a clearer picture of what your life might be, and it would determine what decisions you are meant to take today that would take you there.
This advice although very much appreciated, created uneasiness in me.
I believe that I’m one of those few people who do not have a clear picture of purpose. If someone is to ask me right now, “what is your purpose in life“? I can honestly say “I don’t know.”
I really don’t know what pathway I’m meant to take. What big dream wakes me up every morning?. In what way am I meant to impact people with my life?.
Accepting this reality wasn’t, and still isn’t an easy thing to do.
We live in a world where almost everyone knows what they want to do. Where everyone makes goals, new year resolutions based on what they want to accomplish. You ask a child this, he/she gives you what they believe they would be.
As we grow older there is a subtle expectation that we either grow in that path or accept the pathway given to us by our family. Saying you really don’t know what you want to do now, or in the next five years, feels odd.
Don’t get me wrong I know what I like and what I don’t. I knew early on the career I wanted to get a degree on. Beyond that, the grand scheme of what I’m meant to do, I really don’t know.
Do you know what? I have come to realise that it is fine. It’s perfectly fine to not know what your purpose is here on earth, to not have everything figured out right now. It’s perfectly fine to have a wide range of interests and have difficulties narrowing it down to a specific area.
We are an ever-evolving people, our likes today may evolve into something deeper tomorrow or completely change and It Is fine. Not having all the answers today does not indicate you won’t have the answers tomorrow.
If you are among the lucky ones who have figured out what your life is about, Amazing. If you haven’t, like me, let’s join together to form a group and be Calming down together. Despite my current cluelessness, I strongly believe I would figure this thing called life someday, so would you. You would.
In the meantime, pursue your wide range of interests, take that course, learn that skill, travel to that city/country, start that business.
With time everything would become clearer. I promise.
